Oral Surgery

Oral surgery refers to any surgical procedure in or around the mouth and jaw, usually performed by a dental specialist trained to perform certain types of oral surgery.

There are many types of oral surgery, including surgical procedures such as tooth removal or root canals. Some oral surgeries involve repositioning the jawbone. In other cases, oral surgery may include the removal of a tumor. Oral surgeries can be performed by various dental specialists, such as endodontists, periodontists, and prosthodontists.

These are some of the most common types of surgeries for teeth and jaw:

  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Gum grafting
  • Dental implants
  • Maxillofacial surgery
  • Root canal treatment
  • Jaw and tooth repair after an injury

For dental and jaw procedures where the expertise of a general dentist is insufficient, you may need oral surgery. If you have impacted wisdom teeth, for example, you may need to see an oral surgeon to have them removed. If you suffer from gum disease and need a gum graft, you’ll be referred to a periodontist who performs this type of surgery.
